Regenerative Medicine – Use of Adipose Stem Cells in Japan

Regenerative Medicine – Use of Adipose Stem Cells in Japan

Objectives
(1) To identify new internal (pre-existing customers) and external (potential new customers) opportunities for the use of an adipose tissue stem cell therapy product in Japan. (2) To identify which of three markets were most accessible (a breast augmentation, (b) facial rejuvenation, or (c) osteoarthritis of the knee. (3) To determine the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for our clients current positions, and (4) to provide recommendations on next steps.

We conducted a market study to aid in our understanding of the current and emerging Japanese market for our clients Cell Processing System and Adipose MSC products.

Approach
Primary interviews and secondary knowledge research was conducted in all three areas of interest to the client. Primary interviews were conducted with our clients pre-existing customers to determine product usage patterns, customer needs and product satisfaction in Japan. Questions related the overall regenerative medicine market in Japan, the use of adipose-derived stem cells for breast augmentation, facial rejuvenation, and knee osteoarthritis as they relate the use of our client's product were formulated and used to obtain key intelligence. In this way, market opportunities and new business strategies were identified and recommendations were made.

Business Impact
The results indicated that there was a significant opportunity for the use of the company’s product for osteoarthritis and that although the competition was limited to date, other companies were poised to enter this space with similar products soon. Within the next 3-5 years, increased Government "new product" approvals and reimbursement plans would result in rapid market expansion, but also increased competition and pricing constraints. In the short term, our client's product could have a monopoly in a self-pay market. We also proposed a new 3-part business model that would enable our client to increase their profit margins and massively expand their market share. With regards to breast augmentation, it was clear that our client's product could be positioned as a "premium product" for middle-aged women: women in their 30s and 40s with looser skin who want small enlargements. New marketing strategies were proposed to enhance our client's presence in all three markets of interest.
