Global IV Solutions Competitive Intelligence Assessment

Global IV Solutions Competitive Intelligence Assessment

Challenge
It became clear that in-country manufacturing capacity and output was not representative of global dynamics and that a model would be needed to capture manufacturing capacity, production & market demand. This model would need to tie together all variables for a global view. This global view was to be modeled from information from 12 countries for 14 competitors. The client also wanted a database that could be used as a living document to (a) understand what they did and did not know, (b) provide updates for global, regional country levels as they learned more, and (c) provide continual improvement in resolution and confidence. The client also wanted a foundational piece that would provide a large, broad scope with a global perspective in which triangulation & reference points could be used for internal assessments. In addition, a method to house and communicate the resulting data was desired.

Objectives
Our primary objectives were to obtain competitive intelligence (CI) that would deepen our clients knowledge of the global playing field for IV Solution capacity. Therefore we identified market participants in key markets by obtaining CI in 12 countries for 14 competitors in the areas of (a) manufacturing capacity & footprint, (b) product portfolio, (c) commercial presence, and (d) business strategy. A third objective was to build a database and model system that could be used to estimate production, capacity & consumption on a global basis.

Approach
A global, regional, and country level understanding of the standard IV solutions market was a complex and ongoing process. Information was gathered at numerous levels using primary interviews, secondary research, and modeling analytics based on reasonable assumptions and industry knowledge. A Production, Capacity, and Consumption Model (PCC) was built and verified for global projections. Topics addressed included (1) Global Manufacturing, Distribution, and Demand Projections; (2) Manufacturing, Production, and Capacity in 12 researched countries; (3) Product Portfolio; (4) Quality Processes; (5) Business Strategies; and (6) Commercial Presence.

Outcome and Business Impact
The project provided the client with CI that was used to aid in the short term and long-term corporate decisions on plant expansion, closure, automation, and change in product mix/container type and pricing, within a country, by region, and on a global basis. The PCC model created for the client could house, triangulate and communicate model output in a user-friendly graphics format. The PCC could also be updated with new input data to aid the client with current and future market predictions. In summary, integration of the project-based CI with the PCC model, aided the client with strategic decisions for future investments in capacity, next-generation IV container development, pricing, quality as a competitive advantage, geographic focus area, supply re-balancing, and country and/or regional level tactical planing. In doing so, we provided the client with an analysis tool that can be used over many years for strategic decision support.
